Beverages for Better Sleep

Sleep and rest are important parts of health with experts recommending at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Even though overlooked in busy lifestyles, lack of sleep is linked to serious health problems including depression, cardiovascular illnesses, type 2 diabetes and even sudden death.

Sleeping too much is also not healthy and could be an indication of narcolepsy. Getting the right amount of sleep is easier said and done but today we will look at a number of natural drinks that can help with sleep.

Sleep-inducing valerian tea

Valerian tea is derived from an evergreen plant with white flowers and medicinal roots. The roots of the valerian tea have been used for ages to induce sleep and fight insomnia and research is backing these claims.

Sleep-inducing valerian tea is especially effective in menopausal women and research has shown it relieves insomnia and provides deeper sleep. It is a safe way to get to sleep as studies have proven it doesn’t interrupt the body’s normal sleep pattern.

Warm milk at bedtime

A glass of warm milk at bedtime is a well-known ritual but far from being an empty tradition, they are several scientific reasons why it can help in sleep. Milk contains a substance known as tryptophan and this compound has been observed to increase serotonin levels in the body, a chemical associated with feelings of wellness and satisfaction.

On top of that serotonin induces the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Simply put taking milk stimulates the body to produce the sleep hormone and there is no easier way to catch forty winks than that.

Cherry juice and sleep quality

Cherries come in different varieties from sweet to sour and are grown in different parts of the world. Cherry juice is not one of the traditional substances associated with sleep but several studies have made a strong case for the drink.

Studies have shown that cherries contain tryptophan and melatonin, two compounds associated with sleep and there are findings that support a link between cherry juice and sleep quality. Drinking two glasses of cherry juice per day is a proven method to fight insomnia and increase the length of sleep time.

Peppermint tea for better sleep

Mints have been used by humans for medicinal purposes for centuries and peppermint is a powerful and versatile plant that is believed to have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Peppermint leaves help calm the gastrointestinal tract and this can help with better rest at night. The evidence of peppermint’s sedative properties are still anecdotal and more research is needed to back some of the claims reported.

Ashwagandha tea for insomnia

Ashwagandha or Indian ginseng has many medicinal properties and has been used traditionally to treat anxiety, stress and arthritis. A compound found in the root of the plant has been seen to contain triethylene glycol,  an active component that studies have shown induces better quality and longer sleep. Other studies prove that the herb helps the body to relax in preparation for sleep and its strong effects make it a good recommendation for insomnia sufferers.
